Minnesota Paid (Family/Medical) Leave Law – Effective January 1, 2026
Presenters:
Kerry Gleason, Senior HR Consultant, has over 30 years of direct experience in human resources, handling everything from benefits administration, employee relations, and policy development to handbooks, retirement plans, training, payroll, and performance management. Kerry is SHRM-CP certified.
Karen Von Guten, Vice President, Manager of USource, has 30+ years’ experience juggling all components of Human Resources Management in five different industries. She has been with UBB/USource the last 13 years and is SHRM-SCP certified.

- How does Minnesota Paid Leave Law work?
- When can an employee start taking paid leave?
- Employee/Employer eligibility. Who is covered?
- How are employee payments calculated?
- Employee paid time off. (Medical leave combined with family leave – birth & bonding leave.)
- How many possible weeks of leave time off?
- Job Protection for employees.
- What are the key dates for employers?
- Employer (quarterly) wage detail reports.
- What is the premium rate?
- Do small employers (fewer then 30 employees & if average wage of employees is less than 150% of statewide average weekly wage) pay less?
- Which employers are required to participate?
- Can employers offer an equivalent private paid leave plan in place of MN Paid Leave?
- Employers need to apply with the state of MN for an equivalent plan exemption.
